The Department of Labour says stern action will be taken against plantation companies who do not pay a daily wage of Rs.1,000 to estate workers.

Commissioner General of Labour Prabath Chandrakeerthi said steps will be taken to look into the matter.

There had been protests held in several towns, including Lindula stating that plantation companies have failed to pay the daily wage of Rs. 1,000, which was increased by the government.

The Commissioner General of Labour said the Sri Lanka Estate Sector Employers Association had also agreed to the government’s decision adding there was no justifiable reason for not paying it.
