The owner and the two operators of the ferry that capsized yesterday in Kinniya, Trincomalee have been arrested.
Six individuals including children died in the incident.
Three members of the same family were among the victims of the ferry capsize in the lagoon adjacent to the Kurinchankerny Bridge in Kinniya, Trincomalee last morning.
19 individuals who were rescued after the capsize were admitted to the Kinniya Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, area residents in Kinniya, Trincomalee, agitated over the ferry capsize, attacked the residence of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Trincomalee District Parliamentarian MS Thowfeek yesterday.
It has been reported that the ferry service was initiated as the reconstruction of the Kurinchankerny bridge had not been completed for a long time period.
The incident was followed by unrest in Kinniya last afternoon, with residents burning tires and protesting on the streets.
Governor of the Eastern Province Anuradha Yahampath also ordered the Local Government Commissioner N. Manivannan to conduct an immediate inquiry into the ferry accident in Kinniya, yesterday.
