The Central Committee of the Government Medical Officers’ Association has unanimously decided that it is unsuitable to implement the proposed General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill.
The decision was taken by the Central Committee and branches of the GMOA after considering seven matters that will have detrimental results through the implementation of the bill.
Speaking to media, Member of the Central Committee Dr. Ruwan Jayasooriya said the GMOA compiled a research report under seven topics.
He noted it includes details pertaining to the establishment of the KDU, how it violates the national education policy, complications regarding the university admission protocol, how the university system will be militarized and the impact the bill will have on several sectors.
Dr. Ruwan Jayasooriya noted they also evaluated the impact the bill will have on the stringent mechanism to offer degree programmes in the country, possible brain drain, the adverse impact on the health and education sectors and the entire state service and also the effect it will have on the state university system.
He said accordingly the GMOA decided that the General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill which was presented on the 11th of April 2018 should not be implemented.
