Eight persons including the main trafficker who attempted to smuggle a group of individuals to Canada via sea, have been remanded till the 25th of November.
The order was issued by the Chilaw District Court yesterday.
19 persons were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy on the 9th along the Chilaw coast while returning from a multi-day trawler that was bound for Canada.
Intelligence units had confirmed that a former LTTE strongman named ‘Kannan’, as the mastermind of the human trafficking operation.
Investigations revealed the smuggler had obtained between Rs.3 to Rs.3.5 million from each induvial promising passage to Canada.
Intelligence sources said ‘Kannan’ the chief suspect who fled to Malaysia, returned to Sri Lanka recently and has been engaged in human trafficking operations.
