The JVP has requested the public to oppose the decision to increase fuel prices.
The JVP called on the public to raise their voices against the price hikes.
Former MP Bimal Rathnayake said businessmen are increasing prices of other goods in an unjust manner, based on the fuel price hike.
Rathnayake said oil prices have decreased globally, adding however the government increased fuel prices, burdening the public.
He claimed prices were increased based on changes the government is imposing, allowing companies to intervene.
He added Ministers have become mere puppets.
He urged the government to reduce fuel prices, adding that the price hike was unjust.
Rathnayake said the government must take steps legally to control the increase of prices.
Rathnayake stated the JVP hopes to rally the public to change the prevailing situation in which the people are burdened as a result of excessive price hikes.
On a separate note, former MP Bimal Rathnayake questioned if the government is praising the fuel pricing formula introduced by former Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera, with the intention of seeking International Monetary Fund support.
He said the present government claimed it would’ve been better if the pricing formula introduced by former Minister Mangala Samaraweera was being implemented at present.
He noted the pricing formula was a condition of the IMF.
He said the IMF has said people should elect leaders, and all other matters should be decided by the market.
Rathnayake noted the present government raised various allegations against the IMF, and is now praising the fuel pricing formula.
He said suspicions have arisen over whether the government is attempting to approach the IMF once again.
