The JVP says claims made by certain Members of Parliament that the term of the President must be extended by two years, should not be taken lightly.
Speaking during a public gathering in Matara, former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti said the recent statement made by MP Diana Gamage cannot be taken lightly since the government is in fact testing the waters by allowing MPs to make such claims.
He said there are precedents of illegal power grabs in the country.
He said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had recently claimed that they were unable to serve the public during the last two years and it belongs to the opposition.
He said through the statement, it is evident that the present government failed to work for the public.
Former JVP MP Handunnetti said during the last two the government only managed to destroy the education system, sabotaged the education of children, burdened the farmers, increased the prices of vegetables and other essential goods, was instrumental in exploding gas cylinders, destroyed the job market, and robbed during a pandemic even from medicine and medical supplies.
He said the public expected a disciplined government that will initiate development projects, mete out justice fairly and arrest and punish those who committed crimes.
Sunil Handunnetti said however citizens have received a government that released its affiliates from court cases, handed those on death row, government posts and paved the way for those misappropriate public funds to receive a pension.
He said the present administration is well aware that it did not fulfill its promises or succeeded in taking the country forward and therefore now attempting to grab power arbitrarily.
