The Trade Union Centre for International Labour Law Enforcement charged the Minister of Justice of pushing the country towards bankruptcy by disregarding labour conventions.
Convenor of the Centre Ravi Kumudesh said the statement made by Justice Minister Ali Sabry regarding trade unions raises suspicions over the aspirations of the government.
He said one reason for the crisis faced by the country at present is administrative issues and issues regarding civilized behaviour at work places.
Kumudesh noted the country needs a civilized work sector in order to bring in tourists and investors.
He added it can only be achieved by enforcing globally accepted labour laws and standards.
He said if a dictatorial rule is created by disregarding international standards, the global community will question if Sri Lanka is a civilized nation.
Ravi Kumudesh said therefore a situation in which the global community does not provide loans to Sri Lanka has arisen.
He called on the Justice Minister to refrain from attempting to revoke the Trade Union Ordinance and take the country away from civilization, at a time Sri Lanka must take great efforts to show it is a civilized nation, and the Minister of Labour is not passing the relevant laws.
