Minister of Justice Wijayadasa Rajapakshe has directed a letter to the Inspector General of Police requesting a complete investigation into the harassment and detention of the Matara Divisional Secretary when she visited the Matara Hospital for treatment, on charges that she had not issued fuel licences to health workers.
The incident was reported on the 25th of June while several complaints have been lodged by government officials pertaining to the detainment and harassment.
The Justice Minister in his letter claims that excuses cannot be issued pertaining to such an immoral and inhumane incident, especially at a government hospital, is unacceptable adding that doctors and hospital administrators who have taken an oath to work for the people must be held responsible.
Minister Rajapakshe directed the IGP to conduct a complete investigation and to report facts to court against those involved in the incident and to direct copies of the investigation report to the Attorney General, the Minister of Health, and the Minister of Justice.
The Minister called for the IGP to submit the reports within two weeks.
