Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera has issued directives to the Geological Survey & Mines Bureau to temporarily suspend the issuance of sand mining permits.
Minister Amaraweera said the Walewatta village in Ambalantota was completely destroyed due to sand mining.
The Minister said land that can be used for paddy cultivation and cash crops such as coconut will be destroyed due to mining activities.
The Mines Bureau is due to conduct an investigation and submit a report regarding sand mining.
It was proposed to reach a decision on further steps based on the recommendations of the report.
The issuance of sand mining permits will be temporarily suspended till then
