The opposition claims the present government is postponing elections since it is afraid to face the public.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena said those part of the present administration demanded the conduct of elections while in the opposition but now is delaying the conduct of polls including the Local Authorities Election.
MP Amarasena said the government has Local Authorities Election by over a year although it has no link to the COVID-19 crisis.
He questioned as to why elections have been delayed since the Ministers have been claiming that the public is with the government.
MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena said the government will be able to renew its mandate by holding an election.
He said the public is waiting to respond to the actions of the present government which has been a disaster.
On a separate note, MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena claimed that the public has been complaining about the quality of the fuel available in the market.
MP Amarasena said motorists are unable to run the same mileage as before and claimed it is due to the substandard nature of the oil available in the country.
He said both diesel and petrol-powered vehicles have been facing the issue.
MP Amarasena urged the government not to resort to such measures as the public is already burdened by price hikes and shortages.
He said instead of providing temporary solutions such as granting a Rs. 5,000 allowance, the government should take meaningful steps to strengthen the country’s economy.
