Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera says an extensive investigation will be carried out by the Presidential Special Investigation Unit into a sludge racket.
The Minister said he expects to discuss the matter after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa returns to Sri Lanka from New York.
The Minister said a detailed report will be submitted to the President on the losses incurred by the country due to the racket.
Minister Amaarweera is of the view that issuing licenses to institutions that don’t have refining facilities is a grave mistake.
He said ships entering ports in other parts of the world provide money to country’s for taking in the sludge oil while in Sri Lanka a payment is made for the sludge.
The Minister charged that the Central Environmental Authority and other institutions have failed to pay adequate attention in regulating such operations.
