Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara says instilling fear in the people over the consequences they may have to face for violating the law will result in a drop in the crime rate.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Western Province child evidence video recording unit, on World Children’s Day yesterday the Minister said the Police have a duty to investigate crimes and present evidence for the Attorney General to file charges.
Therefore, Minister Weerasekara added steps will be taken to continuously hear cases before a Trial-at-Bar on children who are victims of child abuse.
Accordingly Minister Weerasekara said criminals will be brought to book.
He added this move would instil fear in criminals and as a result reduce cases of abuse.
