Health authorities say the number of persons suffering from influenza in Colombo and suburbs is increasing steadily.
Speaking to media, Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera said they have received reports that it is spreading among children rapidly.
Dr. Perera said the symptoms of the disease include fever, body aches, cough, and phlegm.
He said although previously, phlegm was associated with COVID-19, now it has been identified that several persons are suffering from influenza.
Dr. Deepal Perera said since it can spread easily among children, they would advise children and adults to wash their hands regularly and also to wear a facemask especially while in classrooms, nurseries, hospitals and while using public transport services.
Dr. Perera noted that anyone suffering from influenza should be given large quantities of natural liquids, Paracetamol as prescribed and rest.
He said warm water can also be used to reduce fever but noted that if someone is suffering from breathing issues or is severely sick then they must seek medical attention.
