Indian has granted Sri Lanka a consignment of drugs and other medical supplies.
The consignment was handed over by the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay to Minister of Health Channa Jayasumana today.
Issuing a statement, the Indian High Commission said a ship of the Indian Navy was specially deployed to ensure an expeditious delivery of the medical consignment, a gift from the people of India.
The supplies were donated to Sri Lanka after a request from the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
India’s Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar acknowledged the shortage of essential supplies in the Teaching Hospital, during his visit to Sri Lanka in March.
The statement also revealed that other medical consignments will also be deployed from India, in response to specific requests by various medical entities in Sri Lanka.
The Indian government said it has earmarked USD 200 million for medical supplies under the USD 1 billion credit line for essential commodities like food and medicine.
