The National Fertiliser Secretariat has informed the Ministry of Agriculture that the urea fertiliser provided by the government of India is suitable for use in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the Secretariat had directed the fertiliser samples to a laboratory in Sri Lanka and obtained a standard certification pertaining to the percentage of biuret in the fertiliser that was revealed to be 0.9%.
Three international laboratory reports were also obtained pertaining to the fertiliser, while the reports also stated that the percentage of biuret is 0.65%.
Biuret percentage of urea used in Sri Lanka is usually at 1%.
Therefore, the National Fertiliser Secretariat informed that there is no concern in using the urea fertiliser provided by the Indian government for paddy cultivation in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, Colombo Commercial Company will distribute fertiliser to agricultural service centres across the island today for crops including rice and maize.
