Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay says India will help Sri Lanka resolve problems within the agriculture sector.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera met the Indian High Commissioner and sought India’s help for food security and environmental protection.
Talks focused on the 65,000 metric tonnes of urea promised by India last month, to avoid any disruption to the current Yala season.
Gopal Baglay commented that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the urea consignment donation which will travel directly to Sri Lanka from its origin in Oman.
The Indian High Commissioner assured that Sri Lanka would receive the consignment as soon as possible.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera revealed that Sri Lanka’s milk production fell by 19.8%, the poultry farming output reduced by 12.1% while egg production reduced by 35%.
The Indian High Commissioner also assured that his country will provide Sri Lanka with its technical knowledge and market expertise, if it is looking to expand the production of sunflowers.
