The indefinite strike action launched this morning by the Government Medical Officers Association is currently underway.

According to NewsRadio regional correspondents, activities at a number of hospitals including the Colombo and Kandy National hospitals have been affected.

However, the strike has not impacted operations at children’s hospitals, maternity hospitals, cancer hospitals, and COVID treatment centres.

The GMOA commenced the strike at hospitals across the country at 8am.

It says the government had failed to respond to the demands of doctors.

Speaking to NewsRadio, GMOA Central Committee Member Dr. Prasad Colambage said the Executive Committee will meet today to discuss future course of action.

He said they are protesting since the government has failed to follow the accepted transfer and over seven other demands.

Dr. Prasad Colambage said a formal announcement on the continuation of the strike will be made during the course of the day.
