The Department of Irrigation says the flood situation affecting the island is not expected to lead to further flooding.
Accordingly, the flood situation in low lying areas of the Ratnapura District has largely abated.
Speaking to media, the Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department, Engineer SPC Sugeeshwara said areas surrounding the Kalu River in the Ratnapura District that was inundated yesterday are expected to return to normal by this evening.
He stated water levels in affected areas in the Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretariat surrounding the Kuda River are expected to remain unchanged today. However, Sugeeshwara stated water levels will recede over the coming days.
He said the Irrigation Department does not expect an increase in water levels of the Kuda River.
The Director said the Dodangoda, Madurawala, Milleniya, and Kalutara Divisional Secretariat areas may see an increase in water levels of the Kalu River while the situation was not critical.
Sugeeshwara requested motorists using by-ways surrounding the Kalu river to exercise caution due to the risk of flooding.
He further stated that low-lying lands surrounding the Gin river are at risk of being inundated and requested area residents and motorists using unprotected by-ways to exercise caution.
