The Ministry of Agriculture says attention has been directed to restrict the importation of seeds of seven crops that can be produced locally, from next year.
Speaking during a discussion at the Agriculture Ministry, subject Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said plans are in place to restrict the importation of seeds for potatoes, big onions, chillies, red onions, undu, maize and peanuts.
Joining the discussion Director General of Agriculture Dr. Ajantha de Silva said steps may be taken to halt the importation of chillies, and limit the importation of potatoes and big onions to 35% and 30% respectively, by 2024.
