Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne says the Police respects the right of the people to peaceful assembly, but will take action against individuals damaging public and private property.
The IGP in a special message to the public requested citizens to exercise their rights within the legal framework.
The IGP said the Sri Lanka Police respects the public’s right to freedom of speech and expression.
He claimed the Police will uphold and protect the rights of the people to assemble in a peaceful manner as well.
He noted Police Stations across the island have also been issued directives in this regard.
IGP Wickramaratne further requested the public to be mindful regarding infringing the rights of others when exercising the right to assemble peacefully.
The IGP noted the Police will act according to their duties against any violence that is against the law and requested social, religious, and political leaders to act in a responsible manner when exercising their right to protest as well.
