Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian SB Dissanayake says he personally opposes the decision to lockdown the country.
Speaking during a media briefing today, MP Dissanayake said the on-going curfew should be lifted on Monday as planned, while encouraging citizens to take all precautions to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.
He said citizens experience severe social and mental health issues due to lockdowns.
MP SB Dissanayake claimed according to a group of 6,000 experts, continuous lockdowns will lead to excessive suicide attempts among children and youth.
He said therefore he is not in favour of imposing lockdowns.
MP Dissanayake noted that the President has given priority to the vaccination drive and therefore the programme should be taken forward to cover the entire country.
He said those unwilling to take the vaccine should be encouraged strongly, as vaccination remains the best deterrent against COVID-19 at present.
Parliamentarian SB Dissanayake stressed that media outlets and politicians should not instill fear amongst the people about the coronavirus.
He said although he has been criticized for the views he made yesterday on COVID-19, he stands by his statement.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, MP Dissanayake said the main reason behind coronavirus related deaths is the unwarranted fear among the public.
