Director General of Agriculture Ajantha De Silva has guaranteed farmers that high quality organic fertiliser will be provided from the upcoming Maha season.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy to address allegations raised against the government over the decision to import organic fertiliser, the Director General said the programme is being carried out in a safe manner, adding therefore the imported organic fertiliser will not be harmful to the country’s bio-system or soil.
He noted only samples have arrived in the country and now large quantities.
He stated although it is confirmed that the fertiliser was tested overseas, it will be tested once again upon arrival in Sri Lanka.
He added the stocks are only unloaded from ships once all tests are conducted to confirm the quality of the fertiliser.
De Silva said while attempts are underway to spread misinformation, the Department of Agriculture can ensure that no room will be left to bring down low quality fertiliser.
He stated therefore farmers need not have any fear, adding that the Department will ensure high quality fertiliser will be provided for agricultural purposes.
