The Sri Lanka Institute of Microbiology has urged the public to minimise the use and overuse of antibiotics.
Chairperson Geethika Patabendige speaking at a media briefing yesterday said the World Health Organisation has warned that by 2050, 10 million people could die annually as a result of antibiotic-induced immunosuppression.
Patabendige therefore called on the public to refrain from overdosing on antibiotics.
She added antibiotics should not be taken if avoidable.
Patabendige also claimed that the intake of clean drinking water and food will also help prevent viruses adding that therefore the need for antibiotics will also reduce.
