Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella has issued directives to health authorities to conduct dengue prevention programmes systematically and efficiently, even amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Health authorities say accordingly; they have already commenced educational programmes on dengue prevention.
The number of dengue cases has arisen in recent days due to the increase in rainfall.
According to reports, 10 deaths and 21,154 dengue cases have been reported thus far this year.
A majority of the dengue cases have been reported from the Western Province amounting to 68 percent of total cases.
Additionally, a large number of dengue cases have been reported from the Kandy, Galle, Matara, Badulla, Kurunegala, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts.
The National Dengue Prevention Unit has also emphasized the importance of destroying dengue breeding grounds especially in the vicinity of schools, since academic activities in schools have commenced following a lengthy break.
