Parliamentarian Harin Fernando says in the event President Gotabaya Rajapaksa steps down, Parliament has powers to appoint a caretaker President.
MP Fernando said Parliament is vested with powers in this regard through the Constitution adding that citizens are not requesting an election.
Joining the Parliament debate on the present situation in the country, MP Fernando questioned how an election can be held, when the public are without power, fuel, milk powder and other essentials.
He called on all Members of Parliament to unite to genuinely develop the country and overcome hardships.
The MP claimed that an individual is needed to govern the country, adding that if the Surcharge Tax Bill is not passed in Parliament tomorrow, funds won’t be available to pay salaries.
He also noted that Sri Lanka has a loan repayment that has to be made in 10-days.
MP Harin Fernando stated that the President, the Prime Minister and the government are at a loss over what should be done.
He said in the event any individual is unwilling to accept the post of President, he is of the opinion that the position should be awarded to Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva for six months.
The Parliamentarian claimed he is willing to forego his salary and all Parliamentary privileges for a period of one year and will not eat from the Parliament canteen either.
He said the entire Parliament must win over the peoples trust once again.
He also accused the party leaders of failing to reach a suitable decision despite convening yesterday.
MP Fernando said in the near future Parliament will come under attack by the people.
