Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa claims certain groups are attempting to transform the economic disaster into a human disaster.
Speaking at a media briefing organised by members of independent political parties MP Weerawansa requested all parties involved to make decisions based on the betterment of the country instead of their personal benefits.
He added the government has already soured international relations with China and warned that relations with Russia would deteriorate due to the recent ruling over an aircraft.
The MP noted Russia is able to supply oil at low prices and is also able to provide solutions to the fertiliser crisis.
MP Weerawansa said Russian tourists contribute significantly to the inflow of foreign exchange, adding Russia was always seen as an ally to Sri Lanka and not a hostile nation.
The MP noted Russia is a main export destination for Sri Lankan tea as well.
MP Weerawansa said the government requested Russia to re-commence flight operations from Moscow to Colombo, noting that Russian tourists are an important source of foreign income.
He added the Civil Aviation Authority will provide a written guarantee that Russian flights will not be disrupted.
Furthermore, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was working at a diplomatic level to resolve the issue pertaining to the detainment of a Russian aircraft
