The National Union of Workers says the government should provide the Rs.5,000 allowance currently given to state sector employees, to plantation workers as well.
Speaking in Parliament today, Parliamentarian Palani Thigambaram accused the present administration of ignoring the plight of plantation workers.
MP Thigambaram stressed plantation workers are struggling to deal with the COVID-19 crisis at present, which has severely impacted residents of Nuwara-Eliya.
The Parliamentarian also noted that despite assurances regarding daily wages of plantation workers, concessions for those affected by the COVID-19 crisis and infrastructure projects in the region, the present administration has made little to no progress on such matters.
On a separate note, Parliamentarian Palani Thigambara said the government should continue to work cordially with India, who is the closest and long standing friend of Sri Lanka.
He said it will leave Sri Lanka in good stead amidst the financial crisis.
