Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage says the government will not allow a shortage of fertiliser in future under any circumstance.
The Minister urged all farmers to support the decision to move towards organic fertiliser for the benefit of future generations.
The Minister expressed his views during the adjournment debate in Parliament on the fertiliser crisis yesterday.
Joining the debate, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Nalin Bandara said farmers as well as consumers are facing issues today due to the unplanned decisions of the government pertaining to fertiliser.
The MP said there will be a food shortage in the country in the first few months of 2022 with prices of goods increasing four to fivefold.
The MP said Minister Aluthgamage is a mere puppet while decisions are reached by other factions.
He added that government decisions have inconvenienced farmers while the agriculture industry has been destroyed.
MP Bandara claimed farmers are out on streets not owing to persuasion by the SJB but on their own accord due to difficulties they are faced with.
Minister Aluthgamage meanwhile said the opposition created an undue fear even during the previous Yala season.
The Minister promised to provide fertiliser on time, adding that in the event of an issue in crops the government will do the needful to compensate farmers.
He said farmers can burn his effigies adding that he supports farmers 200 percent and vowed to ensure they are not affected.
