The opposition says it is important to control the prices of goods rather than providing relief packages to the public.
Speaking during a media briefing Parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne said the government has claimed it will provide a relief package worth Rs.229 billion, and provide Rs.5,000 to state sector workers and pensioners.
He claimed the people have been made beggars due to the increasing prices of goods and questioned the actions of the government.
MP Wickramaratne noted only the 1.5-1.6 million people in the state sector will be provided with the relief package, adding there are seven million people in the private sector.
The MP stated however those in the private sector or who are self-employed will not receive the relief package.
He added therefore it is important to control the prices of goods.
The MP said however the government is unable to control prices of goods due to incorrect policies, and is now providing relief packages.
