State Minister Susil Premajayantha says the general public is severely burdened by the exponential rise in prices of essential commodities.
Speaking in Parliament today, during the debate on the second reading of the 2022 Budget, State Minister Susil Premajayantha said prices of vegetables and other items have increased due to various factors including owing to the prevailing weather condition and shortage of fertiliser and pesticides.
The State Minister said a number of institutions are responsible for maintaining prices at manageable levels and therefore called on such factions to discharge their duties.
He said no one, be the government or the opposition cannot disregard the issues faced by the public due to the rise in the cost of living.
State Minister Susil Premajayantha said solutions cannot be provided merely by issuing gazettes.
He said a number of gazettes were issued and then withdrawn because such decisions were not taken after discussing with responsible persons.
The State Minister said issues faced by the country must be assessed and a suitable economic model must be followed to ease the burden of the people.
