Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil Amarasena charges the government is using various tactics to make farmers forget the promise the President made prior to the Presidential Election that fertiliser will be provided free of charge.
Speaking to NewsRadio the MP said the Secretary to the Ministry has stated that fertiliser required for vegetables, paddy and corn cultivation will be imported while the subject Minister has claimed that fertiliser will not be imported.
MP Amarasena said they also heard of attempts to import fertiliser under the guise of plant nutrients.
He said this move is focused on providing an opportunity for government allies to make profits.
The MP also berated the government for making statements that only organic farmers will be provided subsidies.
The Parliamentarian said illegal and substandard fertiliser material is being imported for organic farming and charged that various groups are attempting to obtain commissions.
MP Amarasena said the government has created a mess over the fertiliser issue just as they have with other issues in the country.
He claimed the government that rode on the back of farmers support will be sent home by the farmers.
