Minister of Irrigation Chamal Rajapaksa says the government in 2022 will initiate a number of irrigation and agriculture related programmes with the aim of ensuring food security in the country.
Speaking in Parliament today, during the committee stage debate of the 2022 Budget, Minister Chamal Rajapaksa noted they will initiate the Knuckles Mountain rage water conversation project with the funding allocated for Sri Lanka through the COP26 summit.
He said Sri Lanka’s first organic farming zone in an area covering 3,000 hectares is also being established to produce toxic-free food items to be sold in the domestic and international markets.
Minister Chamal Rajapaksa noted a special zone is also being established in the North-Western Province which will contribute 30 percent of the national food requirement.
The Minister added that a number of other programmes have been initiated considering the geographical and other matters in mind.
Minister Rajapaksa said they will resume sugar cane cultivation in Kantale in the Eastern Province and the government will meet the irrigation demands of the farmers next year.
He said through the projects, they aim to improve the rural economy.
