President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has extended the government’s fullest support for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to carry out its duties independently.
The President made this statement during a discussion with the Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and Monetary Board member Sanjeeva Jayawardena at the President’s House in Fort this morning.
President Rajapaksa commended the steps taken by Governor Weerasinghe during a short period since being appointed in the role to mitigate and alleviate the financial crisis.
Issuing a statement, the President’s Media Division said the CBSL Governor stated the programme being carried out in consultation with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other financial institutions with the contribution of economic experts has made favourable progress.
The Governor also outlined measures to control inflation and strengthen the economy.
The President stated the government will assist the Central Bank in continuing the process without any political interference.
The Head of State further said, he was prepared to intervene at President whenever necessary for the success of the programme that is being carried out internationally by the Monetary Board and the CBSL Governor.
