The government has taken steps to formulate and update regulations in several areas identified to ensure public safety.
The decision was reached during a discussion held under the patronage of Minister of Justice Ali Sabry and Minister of Public Security Rt. Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera.
The discussion mainly focused on seven key issues.
Special attention was directed to formulate laws required to destroy stocks of drugs seized by law enforcement agencies.
Methamphetamine, or ‘Ice’, was also discussed as sufficient amendments to laws pertaining to synthetic drugs have not been introduced.
The Ministry of Public Security said it proposed to enact laws to expedite investigations and to complete legal proceedings relating to crimes against children and women to prevent further harm to victims.
The talks also focused on increasing the percentage of funds allocated for Police Rewards, streamlining the registration procedure for SIMs, strengthening the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and enacting new property laws.
