Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa claims the government is making every effort to provide relief to the public.
Speaking to media in Gampaha today, Minister Rajapaksa said the government has a programme to repay foreign loans.
The Minister said the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation will also increase fuel prices in the future.
He said fuel prices have increased in the world market as well.
The Minister added there are continuous external obstacles including a global pandemic and crude oil prices increasing in the world market, with the Ukraine-Russia crisis having a significant impact at present.
Minister Rajapaksa claimed the government cannot control international incidents adding however they will strive to resolve all internal matters.
When questioned by media as to when the public can expect concessions, Minister Rajapaksa claimed the public is already receiving concessions.
He said the President and the Prime Minister along with the government are attempting to provide more relief to the public while upholding the people’s trust in them.
Commenting on the rupee being floated, the Finance Minister claimed it was the practice throughout history adding the present administration temporarily halted the process.
He said the situation escalated to an extent where they were forced to take action.
Minister Rajapaksa said he believes this will lead to an increase in foreign reserves adding the opposition and economic experts proposed this course of action.
