The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the government is attempting to spread various misconceptions in society that rice mills owners, not the government, are responsible for the increase in prices of rice.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Parliamentarian JC Alawathuwala said the present administration attempted to increase the price of rice on behalf of mill owners by lifting the control price.
MP Alawathuwala said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa during previous Presidential Elections taunted the public by displaying an onion and questioning the public.
He said the SJB will not do the same as the public are severely burdened and struggling to have one meal daily.
The Parliamentarian said the government issued eight gazette notifications pertaining to rice and were still unable to control the price.
He said the government lifted the control price and is attempting to mislead the public by staging media spectacles.
MP Alawathuwala said the government that came into power claiming to reduce the cost of living doubled prices of essential commodities.
He said the government claimed to sell sugar imported at a tax of Rs.0.25 at Rs.85 and is now selling a kilogram of sugar at over Rs.200.
The Parliamentarian said the government provided ample opportunities for their allies to make billions.
