The JVP says businessmen controlling the market due the government’s weaknesses is the main reason for the increase in prices of essential items.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said prices of goods are determined without government consent.
MP Herath said it is evident that fuel prices will increase again in addition to the prices of gas and milk powder. He said as a result of the price increase in gas, wheat flour and milk powder canteen owners increased the prices of a hopper, milk tea and a packet of rice by Rs.10 while bakery owners increased the price of bread by Rs.5 with prices of bakery products also due to be increased.
He said the public is burdened by steps taken without the oversight of the President and the government.
Responding to several statements made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during the anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka in Anuradhapura yesterday, MP Herath said the country’s citizens do not have concerns pertaining to the Constitution.
He said the majority voted for the President expecting a change and the implementation of the ‘One Country, One Rule’ policy adding they even provided a 2/3rd majority.
He questioned the benefit of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Parliamentarian said the public does not require a new electoral system at a time that they are severely burdened.
