The opposition says the government has a responsibility to manage the public’s cost of living within an administrative framework.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva said the government must therefore intervene and regulate prices of essential commodities instead of letting the public bear the burden.
The Parliamentarian said the government cannot increase taxes by 48.5% after they had already made the situation worse.
He said the present administration is responsible for the prevailing economic crisis adding the US Dollar crisis was formed by unnecessarily controlling prices.
MP de Silva said shortages in rice, sugar, gas and wheat flour also were created due to unnecessarily issuing Gazette Notifications.
Meanwhile, commenting on the decision to increase the price of a loaf of bread from midnight today, MP de Silva said price of a packet of chicken rice has also increased by Rs.25, packet of fish rice increased by Rs.15-20, the price of a plain tea while a fish roll increased by Rs.5.
The Parliamentarian said they cannot let this situation continue. He urged the government to step down if they are unable to govern.
