General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam says the government is not rejoicing in the decisions to increase prices of essential commodities.
Speaking at a media briefing today, MP Kariyawasam said it must be accepted that world over the prices of goods has increased significantly while production has dropped.
He said shipping costs has increased by 100% and stated that businessmen are not willing to purchase goods at a high cost only to be sold at a lower rate, adding that this has led to a shortage in goods.
MP Kariyawasam said as a government, decisions had to be reached, claiming that when the prevalent situation settles, steps will be taken to amend prices once again.
He also urged the public to refrain from comparing the situation with the former government and the accusations levelled at them over prices of goods at the time.
MP Kariyawasam said in 2015 the country was handed over when prices in the world market were less and Sri Lanka had a high economic development growth rate.
