The National People’s Power says the government is responsible for determining the individuals who failed to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks and report to court since former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara and former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Hemasiri Fernando were acquitted of all charges related to failing to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.
Speaking during an event in Puttalam, the Leader of the NPP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said it is clear that the present administration will not fulfil its responsibility.
MP Dissanayake said a defendant is acquitted from a case after hearing defence statements under normal circumstances.
The Parliamentarian however said in the case against former IGP and Defence Secretary they were acquitted based on facts presented by the prosecution.
The Parliamentarian said the Attorney General’s Department filed the case on 855 indictments.
He questioned who was responsible for the failure to prevent the Easter attacks if both Pujith Jayasundara and Hemasiri Fernando were acquitted.
The NPP leader said individuals who generated controversy over being responsible for the attacks have now turned state witnesses adding, therefore, they will also not be punished.
MP Dissanayake said the other accused party are the masterminds adding however no such individuals have even been identified either.
He said it has been proven that the government has failed to take action against those who were responsible for the attacks and those who failed to prevent the attacks.
On a separate note, MP Dissanayake said the economic crisis is one of the main issues faced by the country.
The MP said the economic crisis is affecting all sectors of the public adding this was in no way a result of a natural disaster.
He said the issues faced by the farming community was not due to any natural disaster adding there more than required rain during the Maha season with reservoirs being filled to the brim.
The NPP leader said the farming communities engaged in their industry as usual adding however the present administration failed to provide the necessary components for agriculture.
Commenting on the President’s statement that the income of farmers will be doubled with or without fertiliser, MP Dissanayake said it would be ideal if income can be increased without fertilisers since there will be no additional expenditure.
