The Ministry of Agriculture says the government is in debt to fertilizer companies since 2019, with Rs. 29 billion for chemical fertilizer and Rs. 5 billion for organic fertilizer.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera met representatives of the Department of Agriculture, to hold talks on problems expected within the food crop cultivation industry in the future.
During the discussion, Ministry representatives pointed out that a lack of chemical fertilizer, pesticides and weedicides required for the cultivation of food crops has had a detrimental effect on the yield and also influenced a declining interest of the farming community.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture said the harvest of the Yala season could reduce by 50 percent, but added that it’s goal is to provide uninterrupted chemical fertilizers, pesticides and weedicides from the next Maha season.
