Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says a large number of citizens succumbed to COVID-19 due to the government’s lack of attention to warnings regarding the seriousness of the pandemic.
The Opposition Leader speaking at an event in Gampaha yesterday said in January 2020 they warned of the coronavirus and its risk and with the spread increasing in the country in March, the government then understood the seriousness of the virus.
MP Premadasa said the opposition highlighted the need to wear face masks while the government disregarded the pleas.
When the arrival of tourists and the risk that they bought with them was highlighted, the Parliamentarian said pleas to close borders were disregarded.
He also stated that proposed medicines were ridiculed, and instead the government sought after syrups and religious beliefs to combat the coronavirus.
He noted Sri Lanka’s virus mortality rate is high owing to the delay in commencing the vaccination drive against the virus.
