The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says although the government claims Sri Lanka possesses vast fuel and gas resources, it has thus failed to locate any such resources.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning, Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka said the present administration has not utilized natural gas deposits discovered previously.
MP Ranawaka said the government is attempting to import gas and fuel at a higher cost instead of utilising resources already available in the country.
The Parliamentarian said the Minister of Energy along and the government claims that the country’s foreign debt can be repaid using fuel and gas resources adding however there has been no evidence to support this claim.
He said credible evidence was found by a private firm in Mannar in September 2011.
He said all power plants belonging to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation including the Yugadanavi Power Plant can be powered using this resource adding the good governance government drew up a proposal on how to utilise the resource in 2015.
The MP said Sri Lanka’s natural gas resources are limited adding only the CPC has the right to utilise this resource.
Furthermore, MP Ranawaka said Sri Lanka will be intervening with an international conflict by sacrificing the country to the US electricity mafia.
He said the Californian electricity mafia created the 2000–01 California electricity crisis which resulted in the resignation of then Governor of California, while the Japanese Prime Minister was also ousted by the LNG industry adding the Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard also suffered a similar fate owing to the coal power industry.
The MP said a Chinese firm is due to receive the tender for LNG supply through the current procurement process adding however an international conflict will arise due to the contract being awarded to a US firm bypassing the procurement process and the Cabinet of Ministers.
