The government has expressed its regret over prices of good increasing daily.
Speaking during the weekly Cabinet decisions media briefing Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said the government is attempting to create a favourable situation regarding the prices of goods within the next three to four months.
Minister Pathirana said the ongoing crisis is the result of several matters including the situation in the world market.
The Minister noted the situation is the same globally, and goods of prices have increased sharply while shortages have been reported in developed countries as well.
He added no government wants the public to be burdened through price increases during its term in power.
The Minister reiterated however that the government is taking maximum steps to manage the prevailing situation.
Minister Pathirana said the production process has been impacted and the supply lines have become inactive in some instances during the pandemic.
He added prices of imported goods have also increased due to lack of foreign reserves, and prices in the world market.
Minister Pathirana said the government believes through the increase of fair competition in an open market, prices will decrease.
The Minister noted foreign reserves are being gathered while the country’s export income is also increasing systematically.
