State Minister Shehan Semasinghe says the Central Bank and the government will not force private citizens to convert their foreign earnings to rupees.
Speaking in Parliament, State Minister Semasinghe said they will not pressurise expatriate workers to convert their earnings including their US dollars.
The State Minister said the opposition is making baseless claims to instill fear amongst Sri Lankans working overseas.
State Minister Shehan Semasinghe noted that however if citizens convert their foreign earnings to rupees, the Central Bank will obtain 10 percent of such transactions.
He said however the Central Bank will not force anyone to convert their earnings to rupees as claimed by the opposition.
