The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the government is attempting to reduce state sector salaries and pensions.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka said salaries of members of the government will be donated to the COVID-19 Fund as the first step of this plan.
MP Ranawaka said the government has implemented a campaign announcing salary cuts for the state sector adding it is reported that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa proposed the donation of their salaries as a ploy to elevate the campaign.
The Parliamentarian questioned what the government has provided through the Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour policy statement for the past two years and what resulted in the government proposing salary cuts.
MP Ranawaka said the country’s economy deteriorated due to the government providing tax relief to the wealthy.
He said the government lost 30 percent of its income on the 1st of December 2019 by providing huge tax relief.
The Parliamentarian said the government reduced private income taxes by 6% from 24% to 18%.
MP Ranawaka said the government also reduced corporate tax from 28% to 24% and artificially reduced interest rates.
He said the strain of the reduction was put on the Employees’ Provident Fund further burdening the public.
