The opposition accuses the government of aiming to bring down substandard LPG gas stocks that are rejected by companies in the United States.
Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathna said at present there is shortage of gas and therefore the government is taking steps to present proposals in Parliament to introduce new quality standards for LPG.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Wijerathna stressed that it will lead to substandard gas being imported. She said the country faces a number of issues due to the importation of substandard gas.
MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna claimed a number of families were destroyed due to recent gas leak explosions. She said therefore the government should not promote the importation of substandard LPG.
On a separate note, Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathna claimed corruption is rampant in the country at present.
She said prices of goods and services have risen steeply due to corruption and mismanagement.
MP Wijerathna noted there is a short supply of apparels and household goods while hospital transport and hotel charges have increased considerably.
She said even tuition class fees have increased sharply.
MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna said under the current climate, Transparency International has revealed that corrupt practices have increased in 2021.
She said Sri Lanka has fared worse in the corruption index in the years 2020 and 2022.
MP Wijerathna added there were major revelations about corruption and mismanagement during highway projects and questioned how corruption can increase when citizens have the bare minimum to survive.
