The Ceylon Teachers Service Union says certain politicians and the media are attempting to spread misconceptions in society by concealing important facts regarding the total salaries of teachers and principals.
Taking to social media, General Secretary of the Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said it would take 70 years for teachers and principals to earn thousands as claimed by certain individuals.
Jayasinghe said claims of Rs.44,950 salaries being increased by Rs.11,820 to Rs.56,770 resulting in a salary cap of Rs.89,370, and principals salaries being increased to Rs.58,000 resulting in a salary cap of Rs.97,945, are false.
He said these individuals have concealed the true increment figures, time period taken for teachers and principals to reach these figures and the fact that the proposed salaries will be provided in four phases.
Jayasinghe commenting on the statement made by Minister Wimal Weerawansa pertaining to the salaries of teachers and principals, said claims of trade unions attempting to take undue advantage of the situation are false.
He said the government is attempting to provide solutions in parts. He said the government is attempting to create a false narrative of the situation stating a small group of trade unions oppose the solution while the majority have accepted the proposed solutions.
Jayasinghe reiterated that their struggle is not motivated by money, adding their struggle is for the future of independent education.
