The government says it hopes to produce more stocks of sugar in the country this year, in comparison to last year.
Speaking during the Parliamentary debate, State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura claimed 52,000MT of sugar was produced in 2019 while production increased to 82,000MT in 2020.
State Minister Wakkumbura said the target for 2022 has been set as 120,000MT.
The state Minister said 3,500 hectares of Sugarcane required to reach the goal has been planted while relevant promotional programmes have also been implemented.
He claimed an incentive of Rs.40,000 per hectare will be provided while the government also increased the price of sugarcane from Rs.5,000 to Rs.6,500.
State Minister Wakkumbura said through the procedure they expect to produce the highest amount of sugar to date within the year.
