Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says the government aims to put an end to the era of individuals living on rent in the years to come.
The Prime Minister made this statement during the opening ceremony of the ‘Colomthota Sarasavi Uyana’ apartment complex, comprising 528 housing units, to provide accommodation for 800 students of the University of Colombo and low income families, including those who were evicted when widening the Kelani Valley railway line.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said there are no divisions when implementing housing projects, regardless of race or party affiliations.
The Premier claimed an individual without a house is like a boarder.
The Prime Minister stressed the government is carrying out the housing project with a policy and vision, and not based on a political agenda.
He added it is a people-friendly project.
Premier Rajapaksa said plans have been formulated to convert housing with fewer facilities in Colombo to modern flats, by 2024.
